M4.5 earthquake near Lajamina, Panama

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck 7 km (4 mi) east-northeast of Lajamina, Panama on Monday, October 12, 2026 at 02:22 UTC, at a depth of 10 km (6 mi), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. 1 person reported feeling it to USGS “Did You Feel It?”.
Why here?
This earthquake struck about 54 km (34 mi) from the boundary between the Cocos and Nazca plates. Most earthquakes happen along plate boundaries like this one, where the pieces of Earth’s outer shell collide, pull apart or grind past each other. Stress builds up over years until the rock suddenly slips.
The red lines on the map are plate boundaries.
How strong was it?
Magnitude is logarithmic: each whole step releases about 32 times more energy. This magnitude 4.5 released roughly the energy of 85 tons of TNT. That is about 5.6 times the energy of a magnitude 4.0, a quake people nearby feel but that rarely causes damage. The strongest earthquake ever recorded, magnitude 9.5 in Chile in 1960, released about 32,000,000 times more than this one.
Aftershocks
In the first 14 days after it, USGS recorded 9 smaller earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or more within 100 km (62 mi). The largest was a magnitude 4.4 on October 13 at 05:28 UTC.
- M4.4 · 13 km ESE of Pedasí, PanamaOct 13 05:28 UTC
- M4.4 · 12 km SSE of Tebario, PanamaOct 16 01:50 UTC
- M4.3 · 6 km NNW of El Cortezo, PanamaOct 12 11:07 UTC
- M4.3 · 3 km NE of Flores, PanamaOct 17 16:24 UTC
- M4.3 · 2 km W of Pedasí, PanamaOct 18 05:00 UTC
A stronger magnitude 4.7 followed on October 14 at 05:09 UTC, about 59 km (37 mi) away, so this one is now considered a foreshock.
Outside the United States, USGS mainly lists quakes of about magnitude 4 and up, so smaller aftershocks there are undercounted.
